Memorizing =/= Learning

Another month, another 4 paragraphs of wisdom from Seth Godin.

This time, it’s about the difference between memorization and learning.

I (like many music teachers) am constantly encouraging (read: requiring) my students to memorize important musical terms and concepts.

And there are lots of them – scales, arpeggios, the harmonic series, fingerings, key signatures, musical terms and markings, the list goes on and on.

Instead of using the term “memorizing” though, I think the term “learning” might be more valuable. After all, all of these musical concepts are supposed to build upon each other, and that’s not what memorization is best at.

Take 1 minute and read Seth’s full blog entry here.
